DWC releases 2017 fatal injuries report

Each year, DWC compiles data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and releases a report on Texas workplace fatalities. The 2017 report shows that the trade, transportation and utilities industry saw the highest number of fatalities followed closely by construction. Transportation incidents caused the most fatalities. Truck drivers at risk of arm, back and neck injuries

Long-haul truck drivers experience more than double the rate of injuries and illnesses involving days away from work than other hazardous professions. A study conducted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed that about half of musculoskeletal injuries were to drivers’ arms, back or necks. The most common injuries were sprains and strains, often caused by a fall or contact with an object or equipment. MORE

Webinar on behavior-based safety for today’s workforce

Many behavior-based safety programs are outdated for today’s environment and workforce. EHS Today is hosting a webinar to discuss strategies for bringing these programs to the next level. Certification program announced for drill rig operators

The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators and the International Association for Foundation Drilling developed a certification program for drill rig operators in order to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities required of the job. A task force produced written and practical exams that individuals must pass to receive the certification. The agencies hope that employers, contractors and project owners will recognize the value of the third party independent evaluation tool as it relates to safety. MORE
