NSC pushes safe driving as second deadliest holiday approaches
According to NSC projections, 433 people may die in car crashes over the 2018 Thanksgiving holiday. The agency urges drivers to be cautious and plan a safe ride in advance, as alcohol contributes to more than one-third of fatal crashes during the holiday. Workplace summit focuses on women’s safety
The American Society of Safety Professionals hosted a summit on women’s safety in the workplace. Topics included solutions to prevent violence against women, obstacles keeping women from advancing in the safety and health field and personal protective equipment designed specifically for women. ASSP will publish a formal report and host webinars on key issues. Next year’s summit will include a collaboration session on key issues. MORE

Injury and illness rate continues to decline
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics annual report, the 2017 nonfatal injury and illness rate declined by 0.1 cases per 100 full-time private sector employees, as compared to the previous year. This continues the downward trend from 2003. The manufacturing industry as well as the finance and insurance industry experienced statistically significant rate declines. MORE

A global senior leader at Raytheon spoke at EHS Today’s 2018 Safety Leadership Conference about the importance of organizations fully embodying its purpose. J.A. Rodriguez stated that leaders must form a perspective that drives behavior and priorities. He provided five ways that a leader can facilitate innovation in the organization. MORE
