OSHA accepting nominations for advisory committee

OSHA is currently accepting nominations for members to serve on its Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health. The committee advises the Secretary of Labor on standards and policies affecting the construction industry. There are 14 vacancies, which OSHA seeks to fill with a combination of employees, employers, state safety and health agency representatives and members of the public. Nominations are due by Nov. 16. OSHA cracks down on silica compliance

A recent study showed where OSHA focused its silica enforcement efforts during the first six months of the rule’s implementation. OSHA issued a total of 117 violations, with about 80 percent classified as serious. The most commonly cited violation was failure to conduct an assessment of worker exposure to silica. OSHA expects employers will need to spend about $1,500 per year in order to comply with the new guidelines. MORE

OSHA addresses ammonium hazards

Workers in the fertilizer storage, mixing/blending and distribution industry face serious hazards such as fire, explosions and exposure to toxic gases and hazardous chemicals. A new regional program will address hazards from exposure to fertilizer-grade ammonium nitrate (FGAN) as well as agricultural anhydrous ammonium. The program will cover seven states, including Texas, and will be used as an enforcement tool to emphasize employer obligations. MORE

Proposed rule would allow teens to operate powered patient lifts

The current Fair Labor Standards Act prohibits workers under 18 from certain hazardous jobs, including operating powered patient lifts. The Department of Labor has now proposed a rule that would allow 16 and 17-year-olds to operate powered patient lifts in hospitals, nursing homes and other care facilities. Comments are being accepted until Nov. 26. MORE
