NIOSH issues guide for respirator selection

Air purifying respirators (APRs) can help protect workers from gases, vapors, aerosols or a combination of contaminants. In light of N95 Day this month, NIOSH published guidance on selecting the appropriate air-purifying respirator (APR) according to the environment. The guide provides information on filtering facepieces (N95s), elastomeric half facepieces, elastomeric full facepieces and powered air purifiers. MORE

Blog post highlights gas and vapor hazards on oil and gas well sites

NIOSH continues to research hazards associated with gases and vapors during gauging, fluid transfer and disposal on oil and gas well sites. Based on fatality investigations, the agency lists several recourses containing recommendations, including hazard alerts, video and other articles. MORE

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

Audit report identifies flaws in fatality and severe injury reporting

The Department of Labor Office of Inspector General (OIG) released an audit report identifying issues in the injury and illnesses recordkeeping rule. OIG pointed out that about 50 percent of severe injuries have gone unreported and that there is a lack of guidance and training on how to detect and prevent the lack of reporting. Results led to several recommendations being made to OSHA, including developing guidance and consistently issuing citations. In return, OSHA disputed some recommendations, but agreed that better case documentation could help. MORE
